I went to visit someone quite elderly and we had a cup of tea. When the lid of the sugarbowl was lifted underneath, instead of sugar, were packets of Splenda. This was not particularly surprising. What was surprising was that also in the bowl was a sprinking of long freshly plucked leaves. I enquired, learned they were neem leaves from the garden. The relative had asked Google what to do about itchy skin and instead of recommending lotion Google had suggesting drinking neem tea. The relative thought eating a bunch of leaves fresh from the tree every day would have the same effect.
Later, another older, but not elderly, relative showed me a little pot of grey-brown powder. This relative had received a Whatsapp forward saying that the best way to clean teeth was to mix powdered cumin, baking soda and a squeeze of lemon juice and apply this with a toothbrush. Happily, this person had not decided to do without toothpaste altogether.
