The best shark is undoubtedly the tasselled wobbegong, although it would have been even better had it been named the tassellated wobbelong as I originally misread it. However, it is a fine looking creature. Runners up include the porbeagle (well named), the goblin shark (peculiar) and the cookie cutter shark (commendable hunting strategy). The hammerhead rounds off the top five.
When the Gentleman Friend and I went to the KL aquarium a few months ago, a highlight was undoubtedly the glass tunnel through the largest tank, populated by reef sharks which seemed to take some fiendish delight in swimming very slowly overhead, looking extremely menacing. The tunnel echoed with the screams of the young. I wonder if there was some sort of instinctive, visceral terror evoked by something about these creatures, or if they were simply picking up on their parents’ frissons.
