In the morning the washing was still damp but there was a bit of hot muggy sun so I hung it up on the rickety terrace, which brought it part of the way. But I’m afraid it’ll smell of damp.
Then, once the Gentleman Friend had woken, done his morning yoga and eaten some fruit, we went off to find sloths at one of the smaller places that advertise them. This was a little farmhouse overlooked by the volcano (in common with everything else in the vicinity) and with a small tract of jungle next to it. A rather goodlooking young man took us in, and we saw three two-towed sloths including on baby sloth, all asleep as well as plenty of dart frogs, toucans and other birds. A very pleasant excursion, though expensive as is everything in Costa Rica. This was a family farm, formerly a cattle ranch, that is being rewilded.
After this a quick lunch of fish in town (again, decent ingredients but not much attempt at creating flavour), followed by coffee at what is supposed to be the best cafe in town, about halfway to the volcano from La Fortuna. Here the clouds cleared for the first time and we got a really good look at the volcano, a small but perfect triangle except for the very top which was scooped out in a crater like the half-boiled eggs. Very beautiful.
We decided to walk back as it had rained and cleared the mugginess. It was a pleasant walk despite being along the main road (one hesitates to call it a highway), until a stray dog decided to become our friend and leapt up, jumped around joyously, playfully took my forearm in its teeth, etc. It was sweet but rather disgusting also, not least because there were at least two very large ticks on its back. It followed us all the way to town and I was worried it would follow us to our flat and stand in wait outside, but luckily it suddenly lost interest and instead made friends with a jeep and dashed off to try and trot (and gallop) alongside it, heedless of others. It was still a good twenty minute walk to our flat, so I felt rather disgusting all the way, my forearm covered in dog saliva.
