A few days without posting as I settle back into my life. It’s not quite the usual, as of course the GF’s mother is still here. She is lovely, but having another person is inevitably a bit disruptive. I have made myself a little spot on the floor of the bedroom where I have been catching up on some work and settling in my new computer, with some care to have it secure and well organised from the start.
I had an email from a university friend that my old advisor, the person I was fondest of at university, was asking after me by name. I had avoided him for a while thinking that he would be disappointed in me, that I didn’t follow the classics or academia as I was more suited to. But in those days 9/11 had just happened and it seemed important to engage with the world as it was then. And even that is now in the past.
We watched the first episode of Alias Grace. I enjoyed it far more than the GF or his mother. It is a very different adaptation than the Handmaid’s Tale, much more literary. It felt extremely long. The actress was excellent and immediately sunk into my mind as what Grace looks like; the actor playing the doctor, on the other hand, was less convincing. I don’t know if we’ll continue watching as the others didn’t enjoy it as much.
I came back home to a slight shock as I found that my Netflix recommendations were fully taken over by Barbie. I thought at first that my account had been hacked, then realised that over Christmas the GF’s youngest relatives must have accidentally logged into my profile back in London. It will require some tending and correction to return it to respectability.
