Self-indulgence

Indulging in some proper trash, a fantasy novel by Sarah Maas. Somewhat embarrassingly explicit in places, but a fine read that rattles along for what doesn’t feel like nearly 2000 pages. It’s no Bleak House to be sure, though I wonder what Dickens would have made of today’s fantasy writing. Would he have been intrigued by the idea, if not the execution, of a novel set in a bleak, unequal very contemporary city, but featuring a romance between an enslaved fallen angel and a sassy half-human fairy, with guest appearances by werewolves, mermen, archangels, vampires and what else? He would probably have been more intrigued than Jane Austen at least; for all I prefer her books to his, I do get the sense that CD was an open and curious person.
