Post-industrial paradise

I had lunch with a person who recently wrote a white paper on deindustrialisation in Malaysia. Fascinating how this has suddenly become such a hot topic – not just deindustrialisation, at least in developed countries, but the next step, the de-servicing of the economy with AI and automation taking over. I listened to a radio programme recently about how it might end up becoming the responsibility primarily of the government to drive employment, not that of the private sector at all, perhaps in alliance with a basic income. I am sceptical about a basic income (though am not an economist of course) but it seems like a plausible shift in employment in my uninformed view. State employment is hardly a new phenomenon, which also makes me nervous about it it might manifest in countries which are not post-industrial at all.
