We were invited to brunch by the friend of a friend of the GF. It was to celebrate their climbing Mount Kenya, specifically a bit which requires very technical climbing. It was a funny old gathering. Mostly women. The friend of a friend was a thin white American woman and her fellow climbers were two Kenyan women. They all clearly found it a rather spiritual experience though it did feel as though they went into it very spiritual. I found it all a bit odd, but interesting to observe, as they all told their stories and the awakenings they went through. One of them got altitude sickness and had to be evacuated, which felt really quite awful so her spiritual awakening involved lots of delirium and an oxygen tent. Perhaps the most impressive person there was a Kenyan woman who stumbled into climbing and is now one of the top climbers in the country. There was something still and thoughtful about her that felt quite different from the nervy yogatastic determinedly spiritual peace of the rest.
After this the GF and I went for lunch to a Sichuan restaurant and were amazed at how good it was. There is something to be said for Chinese takeovers of the economy.
