Sanuel Pepys had a busy day at work and so did I but I went with the Gentleman Friend to visit the Auckland gallery. It was adequate at best, but had a good collection of portraits of Maori notables by one Gottfried Lindauer. Though the jewel in the collection’s crown they were oddly displayed, along a dismal back corridor with lighting reflecting off those hung higher up so they could not actually be seen. The rest was fairly ordinary stuff, though I liked one room which was hung in a particularly harmonious way. Too many art galleries in old buildings clearly wish they were white cubes and just ignore the room they’re in instead of responding to it.
In the evening we went to a happening Pasifika restaurant. It was filled with Pacific couples and groups, which seemed promising, but the place itself was rather drab and while the food was nice there was nothing really exciting about it, it could have been well-executed pan-whitebread fare. And so ended another day, another year.
