Last night was Loi Krathong, the festival in which Thais float lanterns on rivers and lakes to apologise for polluting them the rest of the year. We were told to go to Saphan Thaksin to watch it, and so we it. It was immensely crowded, though there is clearly more personal space in Thailand than in many other country. There were thousands of people milling around, carrying unlit lamps made out of coloured bread and flowers, and people selling more along the side, along with tanks of tiny tortoises, fish and what could have been either water snakes or small eels. These were rather sad. Along the river were men with nets on long poles to lower the lanterns down into the water. So there were lanterns floating on the water and fireworks in the sky and the passing boats were lit up and the full moon shone overhead. Anyhow, it turned out the ferry upriver had stopped running, so we took the next boat we found, which turned out to just go to a mall which had a huge outdoor stage with men in violet doing kungfu (muay thai?) moves to music. We lingered a bit then took the boat back to Saphan Thai and the train back to Ari where we had a poor dinner which was slightly made up by finding Lindt truffles at the 7-11.
We watched the final episode of this season of Better Call Saul. It was very good, though generally I thought the season was a tiny bit more plot driven than others
A flood of work has descended. It’ll be a busy weekend.
