Jeonju

Arrived here a few hours ago after some days in Seoul which were overshadowed by the news that my grandmother was seriously ill. For a couple of days I was planning to return to Lahore, leaving the Gentleman Friend partway through a trip meant to help him recover after the events of the past months, fly back to KL where my travel documents for Pakistan were, and then on to Lahore. Fortunately she’s recovered slightly and her children are flying in.

Seoul seemed a very livable city. One of my favourite bits was a neighbourhood up in the hills, overlooking its massive fortress wall, with little cafes and pleasant little houses. But for the most part we were in the more generally well known areas.

In Jeonju we are staying in a hanok set in a garden, and have just returned from a dinner of bibimbap followed by chocopie. So far so conventional; Jeonju is well on its way to becoming a hellscape like Hoi An in Vietnam, but not yet, and not on weekdays.

I remain worried about my grandmother. I might return to Lahore for a few weeks after getting back.
