I am in Devon and sworn to have cream teas. I arrived today at around lunchtime, got myself some fish and chips and ate them in a park, then wandered around a bit, got groceries, and ended up at a tea room for my first cream tea. It was served by a blonde woman with arms like hams: massive homemade scones, strawberry jam and the biggest pile of clotted cream I’ve seen in my life. All too often you get meagre little bowls of clotted cream the size of a soya sauce dish at a sushi restaurant. I needed a lie down afterwards. The jam was nice, the cream was superb but the scones were a little loose and had a tinge of baking soda.
I am staying at an airbnb in Okehampton. I was a bit nervous about it, as I knew nothing about Okehampton before booking it, or indeed arriving here, and picked it because it was on the edge of Dartmoor and the train goes there. It looks promising, though. The airbnb also seems very comfortable – again I was nervous because it’s in someone’s house and the bathroom is shared, but it is absolutely immaculate and the room is very comfortable and spacious. I can see a glimpse of the moors from my window.
