On our walk over Hampstead heath we spotted a heron on the hunt. A large, beautiful bird, with all its focus on a clump of grass. It pounced and emerged with a small wriggling thing, a mouse perhaps, and swallowed it down whole. Very dramatic in the moment, and more successful than the last hunt we witnessed. I realise now, as I go back to look for the link, that I didn’t write about it at the time (though I might do a retrospective post), as it was on our great safari from Kilifi to Naivasha, where we watched a group of lionesses stalk, separate and hunt a zebra, which got away.
Later, we saw slugs eating diced carrots and clearly enjoying them greatly.
