Hanok day

A purposely quiet day in Jeonju, starting late with a stroll down to the Nambu market to have rice soup with bean sprouts for breakfast. Mistakenly had a beef tripe soup instead but this turned out to be for the best as it was quite mild and wholesome feeling. Then strolling about the centre of town, visiting the very pretty main shrine and the Catholic church which was prettier on the outside than inside. Korean shrines all seem to have nearly identical ornamentation. A visit to the handicraft centre to see if I could find something high quality non-tatty to take back and tottered out again after finding only 900,000 won paper fans. A climb up the hill to a pavilion overlooking the city where there were scores of girls here on a school trip, who (as often happens) clustered around the Gentleman Friend to interrogate him. A similar clustering happened later with a Jehovah’s Witness. A hunt for Korean pancakes (hotteok) proved successful after some moments of dismay when I was convinced we had been directed towards hotdogs instead, and finally another (better) bibimbap for dinner. In between, work. A rather food focused account, but that’s often my way.

Hanok living is very pleasant. I like sleeping on heated floors, and like the strict no-outside-shoe rule. However the buckwheat pillows take getting used to.
