We are both enthusiastic plant owners, but less good at keeping them alive. The Gentleman Friend’s boss is a keen gardener and on a brief visit this weekend was horrified at the state of the plants. He insisted on applying fertiliser and watering them himself, gave strict instructions on the plant care regime we should follow and promised to bring a frangipani and another scented plant as a gift. We disposed of one plant the following day, and he was approving: I’ll plant the frangipani in that pot, he said. The GF replied that we no longer had that pot. Why, he asked, did you drop it? No, but… said the GF. How could you lose it, it was a pot, he said. Well we threw away the plant, said the GF. So where’s the pot? asked he. The two looked at each other in mutual imcomprehension and then the GF finally said, we threw it away in the pot. At that moment we all realised that the GF and I will never have a truly green thumb.
