I’m watching Najib’s press conference. He looks a wreck. He has conceded defeat while saying, basically, that ‘we might have lost but no one else won’ – presumably this is due to a technicality in that the opposition PH coalition is not registered as a coalition and none of its component parties by themselves form a majority. He has said that the agong, the king, will pick the prime minister. So the game is not over yet (the royals are said to loathe Mahathir for limiting their powers back during his regime, and in fact I understand he is persona non grata in Johor, a state that the PH has won for the first time). Interesting. Clearly reassuring antsy Malaysians is not a high priority. Rumour has it that Wan Azizah, the leader of the PKR (the largest of the PH parties) might be picked instead.
Later: After many delays, rumours and speculation, Mahathir was sworn at 10 in the evening. So, a historic couple of days for Malaysia. To be seen, now, what lies ahead.
