Critics

A low-level manifestation of the current trend against experts is the backlash again critics: that tastes are subjective, that my experience of a piece of music or a meal will be different from that of a critic and s/he is looking for something different than ordinary people anyway, and how dare one person have the ability to destroy a career or business.

I think all these criticisms are wrong. The point of a review is not to tell you what is good or bad necessarily, or at least that is not what you should take from a review. Instead, a critic, a good critic, will evaluate a film or a book on the basis of his or her tastes, giving context and history, and the information required to make up one’s mind for oneself. I very often dislike the films Mark Kermode likes, but his reviews are usually good at helping me gauge if I’ll enjoy them or not.

And this is all so obvious, that I feel stupid typing it out, but here we are on the internet.
