In the morning we went to the farmer’s market again. Pickings were slightly less good than previous weeks, but still excellent. No experimental purchases this time, just a good lot of produce that should suffice for much of the week.
At 2 we were supposed to go surfing, but our instructor forgot. So after waiting a bit, and chatting with the property manager, we took a couple of bicycles and went back to the property we’d looked at with the estate agent. Both to see it again, and to assess how far away it felt.
Bicycling was great fun as there is little traffic especially off the main road, and one isn’t pressed to go at speed as in London. Nevertheless, I managed to forget how to stop and get off the bicycle, always a problem with my short legs, so managed a few skids and near-tumbles. In any event, it was a lovely ride there, through beautiful jungle with immense trees filled with birds and monkeys. It was all gravel, though, so very bumpy and sometimes slippery.
We poked around the property for about 10 minutes and discussed what we’d like to do with it, where additional construction could go, etc. I did spot what looked like a very termity bit which made me nervous, but we shall see.
On the way back, we turned onto a small seaside toad and cycled some way north along Playa Negra until we found a quiet spot on the beach, a couple of kilometres from the nearest cluster of people and with virgin jungle behind us. We swam for a bit, amidst medium sized waves, until the sun was starting to set, and then cycled back.
The idea of living a 30 minute bicycle ride from the nearest town seemed less intimidating after this, especially if we can get decent trailers for cycles. Of course I would have to buy a bicycle that was appropriate to my size, perhaps even a child-sized one. However, it did occur to me that we have been told that when it rains it becomes a sea of mud, which would be unpleasant and perhaps impossible to cycle through. We shall, as I said, see.
