Another crack appears in our world as we currently know it. The build up was frightful: troops sent to the region, then tourists and pilgrims made to leave, then political leaders put under house arrest, then rumours spreading, then a blackout and curfew and then a constitutional travesty. I don’t see how this will not explode into horror in the region.
Funny, I had always thought Pakistan would be the bad guys, that India, being secular and democratic, would show some sort of wisdom that we seemed to lack. How wrong I was, how I misunderstood democracy and power.
Meanwhile the protests continue in Hong Kong, trouble simmers in the Straits of Hormuz, Ebola simmers in the Great Lakes, and around the world norms crumble.
The world will be remade in my lifetime, though I don’t know if I’ll live to see its new form.
