A few days ago a word fell out of my mind. It fell as though it had been greased, and every time I tried to pick it, it flew out of my hands and disappeared again. I could remember words adjacent to it, and a few times I googled them to remind myself, but as soon as I closed the tab the word would slip out again. This took place over a full week. Then on the weekend the word returned to my mind, cast around with significance and the memory of its repeated escape and I thought of it again and again, trying to once more fix it in my mind. Gradually it lost its distinction, and became nearly another word, though I wonder if it will ever be ordinary again.
