I missed yesterday’s post due to not remembering till I was well on my way to sleep, and think I must have fallen asleep minutes or seconds after remembering. So two posts today!
Yesterday’s first excursion was to two slightly disappointing places. One was to a well-reviewed restaurant called Table and Apron in Damansara Kim. It got off to a slightly poor start, with the waitress asking where we were both from and learning I was from Pakistan, exclaiming that I spoke very good English, and she had never in her life met a Pakistani who spoke good English. I wanted to tell her I can juggle too, but as a respectable woman approaching middle age, smiled politely and placed my order.
The food was also fine but disappointing. The best was the fried chicken which was extremely crispy but otherwise uninteresting – the cincalok chicken at Chocha Food Store is much more flavoursome. The grilled okra was an interesting idea but the okra was under-grilled and the dressing was, as is usual with much Malaysian food, far too sweet. And finally the crab ulam rice was nicely herby as the name would suggest, but the sambal with it was not particularly complex, again too sweet, and the dish as a whole really needed something to lift it.
It was a very hot afternoon, so after taking a few minutes to walk around the area, we called an Uber to the next stop, the Art for Grabs fair in Jaya One’s ‘enrichment mall’. I am not clear on what an enrichment mall might be be, but Jaya One itself was one of those massive complexes that look like they are composed entirely of the backs of buildings. Art for Grabs itself was a craft fair with many of the usual stalls one sees at such events, along with a bunch of ‘activism’ stalls and a very loud cooking demonstration sponsored by Women’s Weekly Magazine and Waitrose. Fine to walk through, and we bought a bar of mud soap (or rather the gentleman friend bought it and I didn’t scowl), and a jar of pickled petai.
The second excursion was to Isetan, where once again I wondered if they actually sell many of their Japanese food items; I’m thinking of the 30 ringgit packs containing 6 smarties, or the 100ml jar of pickled grapes, that sort of thing.
