The decision was made – I’ve accepted in principle an extension to one of my editing contracts, but will not have to travel for it. Normally I like travelling for these things, but this time it would have been a little too close to the gentleman friend’s return after three weeks away, and come soon after I spent a few months away for work. The work itself will be tedious and hard with a very tight deadline, but once it’s finished it’s finished.

There is an interesting feature in the Guardian today about preparations for the Queen of England’s death. One curious fact is that much of Britain’s royal pageantry is quite new, and came about only during imperial days. It will be interesting when she does die – I am both relieved that I almost certainly won’t be in London at the time and feel like I’ll miss out. I wonder if her successor’s deaths will be so carefully planned for. Seems unlikely.
