Post office lunch

Strolled down to the post office today, which has been converted into a sort of community space with a low key zero-waste restaurant. Pleasingly, the food was good and it wasn’t too expensive, so I think I will be going back there.

Work remains overwhelming, though I’m slowly making my way through it. A few nights of not quite enough sleep, and not a day without working on something for a very long time, it feels like. Well, not since Dartmoor though I think even there I had work at the back of my mind. No good.

I found a bottle of mysterious dark liquid in the freezer (it was the only thing there, I hasten to say) and defrosted it to try to figure out what it might be. It turned out to be red wine which I must have frozen to cook with. Luckily on the weekend I’d bought a pack of very beautiful lentils from a women’s cooperative and thought I’d try my hand at something French rather than desi. Unfortunately it wasn’t till I started cooking that I realised what I had thought were lentils were actually (I think) allspice. Very tasty, but not suitable. So a quick course correction to use the mirepoix for mushrooms and peppers, make the rice flavoured with allspice, and it was at least edible if not an unmitigated delight. The wine remains unused.
