Quick note

From a Singapore church cafe. My earlier post, written en route to Singapore, is on my iPad and is yet to be sent so the updates will be out of order.

This is the second full day, third partial day in Singapore. Once again I got stopped at immigration and quizzed – my name must be on some sort of list, I think, as it’s now 2 out of 2 and no other country stops me so. I did ask but they said the usual thing about it being a routine stop, ‘everyone is getting checked’ etc.

On the first evening we had perhaps the most successful shopping trip ever. I found a pair of reasonably attractive and comfortable walking sandals and, just around the corner, the GF found a much desired suitcase, all within about 10 minutes and at substantial discounts. Most satisfying.

My walking sandals are Tevas, and unfortunately the soles are not as good as their hideous predecessors’ – we went to the zoo yesterday and I slipped rather dramatically and one knee that is thrice the size of the other and twinges rather badly.,p> The zoo was generally splendid, but did bring home the horror of their existence, even with all the care and research that goes on in a modern zoo. Looking at the Siberian tigers in a tropical enclosure, or the cheetah prowling by the glass aware that there were invisible watchers on the other side, I did wonder how ethical this artificial existence really is. If we have killed their entire species maybe we should stop trying to keep its last remnants artificially alive when we can never probably reintroduce them in the wild.

I had the best eel I have ever had yesterday, at an unagi restaurant that had a remarkably long queue. We’d heard about it and had vaguely thought of going there for lunch and saw there was already a considerable number of people lining up when we passed, half an hour before it opened. So we got in line as well and it was gratifying to get in on the first seating with about four times as many people behind us as in front. I hate queuing but that was some delicious unagi.

Today is a working day (sort of), hence the church cafe for both me and the GF.
