The place we are staying is in the middle of an animal sanctuary, so we live amongst zebras, giraffes and gazelle, as well as a rather sweet dog who comes to say a daily hello and then runs off. There are the hippos below, and any number of birds, including a highly territorial pair which must be nesting as they swoop down at our heads if we get too close. It’s rather like the great skuas which divebombed us in Faroe Islands, but those were massive, dangerous birds, while these were small and delicate with fronded tails. Nevertheless we retreated.
The zebras sometime come and drink from our lily pond. The first time I opened the front door to see a herd of zebras in the porch I nearly jumped out of my skin. And the giraffes often drift by and are a great opportunity for photos of my working conditions (laptop closeup against background of enquiring giraffe) to send to colleagues.
We wandered to its eastern limits today and found a sign saying ‘do not enter’ and behind it some cages with immense vultures and pelicans inside. Rather odd and unsettling, hopefully for a veterinary care or something.
After lunch we called the taxi over and went down to the farm shop, where we had coffee at teh bakhouse, inspected the pottery shop and then bought some groceries. And now back, and that is the end of Sunday.
