Last night I nearly poisoned us both. I was experimenting with mahlep, a Turkish spice and misread a Google Translate version of a recipe and put in 2 tb instead of what I assume was supposed to be 2 tsp. It tasted rather strongly of bitter almonds, so I looked it up online to learn that that the flavour comes from cyanide, as with bitter almonds, and a full sized man should not have more than a teaspoon in any given day. Luckily this was before we started eating, so we just had a small spoonful of the very bitter rice, followed by a weirdly bitter, almost inedible, chard. Luckily we had bought some mezze that afternoon, so there was some other food, tastier and less, deadly, to eat.
I did make up for it this morning through sudden inspiration and a lucky confluence of ingredients: fresh sourdough, smoked salmon, baba ghanoush, capers and fresh poached eggs for a sort of eggs benedict, a platter of pomegranate, olives and walnuts, and two excellent steamed artichokes with a vinaigrette, a green salad and finally stewed pears (with mahlep!) and ricotta. An excellent brunch, though I forgot to bring out the grapefruit.
