I had two visits to the flat today, once in the morning to have the kitchen measured for cabinets, and once for the contractor to make payments for our windows. It snowed a great deal in the morning, so on the morning visit it was very slippery and hard to walk straight, and there were stalled cars at every junction and, in one case, a man walking in front of a car with a towel which he would lay on the road before the front wheels, the car would drive over it, mud spraying under the spinning wheels, then he would move the towel in front of the wheels again. All in all, it made me think I will never get in a car in Pera in the snow if I can avoid it.
The kitchen measurement guy was, understandably rather grumpy as he had to wait while I tottered over and then of course I don’t speak Turkish. Anyway, the measurement is done. The kitchen is very, very far from having straight lines.
On the second trip to the flat, in the early evening, the snow was largely gone. There was still some ice between the cobble stones, or maybe slush, so there were few points when I thought I would fall and break my head, and rather more when I thought I might get wet, frost-bitten toes. I was supposed to go to the carpenter’s workshop, but he was out apparently, so I just met the contractor.
Going twice in one day did make me realise that I almost always go in the late afternoon, and the light etc is very different at other times of day. This should of course have been obvious to me.
A quite delicious lunch today, though I had it to myself. Liver fried with pomegranate molasses and wrapped up with tahini, baba ghanoush and tabbouleh in a crispy naan.
